BASIC CARVING TOOLS (for wood and ice)

Wood Carving Tools

Carving knife - a specialized knife used to pare, cut, and smooth the woods.
Gouge - tool with a curved cutting edge used in a variety of forms and sizes for carving hollows, rounds and sweeping curves.
Chisel - large and small, whose straight cutting edge is used for lines and cleaning up flat surfaces.

V-tool - used for parting, and in certain classes of flat work for emphasizing lines.

Veiner - a specialized deep gouge with a U shaped cutting edge.

Sharpening equipment - such as various stones and a strop, necessary for maintaining edges.

Ice Carving Tools

Three basic tools to help illustrate the process that an ice carver generally to create a sculpture are:

Chainsaw - generally a rough cutting too
Six prong - shaping/smoothing tool
V chisel - refining/detailing tool

Additional tools are safety equipment like gloves, boots, and eye and ear protection.

2009 National Artist of the Philippines (Visual Arts and Film)

Last July 2009, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo proclaimed Carlo J. Caparas as one of seven (7) National Artist of the Philippines for 2006, under the new category of "Visual Arts and Film." Mr. Caparas, the famous director and comic writer of “pinoy massacre movies” and the other awardees in various categories has been widely criticized by different sectors of the society dubbing the list of as “non-deserving” and “sacrilegious” to the spirit of artistic recognition.
But Carlo J. Caparas receives the most comments from the critics, some believed that his inclusion was influenced primarily by Malacanang. Another film director Ben Cabrera (winner of the National Artist for Visual Arts and Film in 2006) also criticized the award given to Caparas who believes that Caparas doesn’t deserve the recognition because he is known for making “pito-pito films (B-grade full-length movies made for only 1 week)” in the 90’s. “The awards used to be all about prestige” Cabrera says.
Personally, we should give Caparas a chance to prove that he is worthy of receiving the 2009 National Artist of the Philippines Award. His “not so good works” belongs to his past when he was just starting. Maybe we should just look at the bright side of him anyway he already been awarded so that’s it!

ICE CARVING

Ice carving or ice sculpture is a form of sculpture that uses ice as the raw material. Sculptures from ice can be abstract or realistic and can be functional or purely decorative. Ice sculptures are usually associated with special because of their limited lifetime (obviously because ice melts).

HISTORY OF CARVING IN PAETE, LAGUNA

(St. James The Apostle Church) Paete Church - Like many of the churches in the province, the Paete Church was built during the early Spanish period. But the novelty of this church lies in the fact that all the religious images found here were carved and/or painted by the residents of Paete long ago.

Paete is a lakeside town located at the northeastern part of Laguna, along the shores of picturesque Laguna de Bay. The town is made famous by craftsmen highly skilled in woodcarving and its embellishment. Paete has come a long way from what Jose Rizal describes as that town from whose "carpenter shops" were issued images "even those more rudely carved" (chapter VI, Noli Me Tangere ). Even now, Paetenos continue with their centuries-old tradition in carving and painting. Rizal would feel proud of the town's masterpieces, evident in statues, pulpits, murals and bas relief found in churches, palaces and museums all over the world--among them the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York, the Mission Dolorosa in San Francisco, the San Cayetano Church in Mexico, the St. Joseph's shrine in Sta. Cruz, California, various churches in the Philippines and the Ayala Museum in Makati, Philippines. The official town hero is not a statesman nor a soldier but a woodcarver, the master artisan Mariano Madriñan, whose obra maestra, the life-like Mater Dolorosa, was honored by the King of Spain with a prestigious award in Amsterdam in 1882. The town was proclaimed "the Carving Capital of the Philippines" in March 15, 2005 by Philippine President Arroyo. It is also believed that the modern yo-yo, which originated in the Philippines, was invented in Paete.

Many descendants of these skillful artisans have found a niche in the culinary world. Ice sculptures and fruit and vegetable carvings done by dexterous hands of Paeteños abound on buffet tables of cruise ships and world-class hotels and restaurants. Today the town thrives mainly on the sale and export of woodcarvings and taka (papier maché), tourism, poultry industry, farming and fishing.
